There are a number of fascinating trends in 2019 that will drive the global beauty industry and products that will hit the shelves. While trends can vary a bit between the America’s, Europe and Asia Pacific, there are some common trends that prevail globally. Here are our top picks of the biggest global beauty trends for 2019 with some fabulous product recommendations. Click the “BUY” buttons to see more info on the products and to shop.
Our top pick of 2019’s leading global beauty trends, sustainability is about responsibility, accountability and ethical practices across the beauty supply chain. Beauty industry players are being required to adopt responsible practices toward the sourcing and manufacturing of their products. These include using materials responsibly, water sparingly, treating the planet and its inhabitants with care and respect, and eliminating or at least reducing waste to a minimum.
We can play our part by only supporting those beauty and personal-care companies that embrace these sustainable, eco-friendly practices.
THE SKIN’S MICROBIOME
The skin microbiome was one of the biggest trends in 2018 and is set to continue into 2019 as major beauty corporations continue to invest in new microbiome skincare ingredients and products.
The skin’s microbiome is a collection of microorganisms including bacteria, yeasts and viruses. Probiotics are the good guys. They are microbes that nourish your skin and protect you from harmful pathogens and environmental damage. Diversity is also key. The greater the variety of bacterial species on the skin, the healthier its barrier will be. Probiotic skincare formulas aim to help foster this rich and diverse microbial community.
The Esse Plus probiotic skincare range
The ultimate sustainable, locally produced probiotic skincare range is the ESSE Plus range of products. These provide high-level probiotic actives to boost your skin’s microbiome for maximum anti-ageing results. We are HUGE fans. It’s kinda pricey but totally worth it! I’m busy saving up to replenish my Contour Eye Cream, Probiotic Serum (the star of the range) and daily Defence Moisturiser.

Think filler or Botox in a bottle! Gain without the pain (no, it’s actually not that bad at all). Topical products that work to provide skin-plumping and wrinkle-filling benefits are all the rage. Although a more temporary solution, the active ingredients in these products provide firming and plumping effects that give skin a youthful, glowing look.
The Mayo Clinic advises to look for active ingredients like retinol, hydroxy acids, kinetin, tea extracts and coenzyme Q10. Retinol works by getting rid of free radicals that are responsible for damaging healthy skin cells and producing wrinkles. Hydroxy acids exfoliate the skin, remove dead cells and promote new ones to grow. Kinetin promotes the production of collagen. Coenzyme Q10 and tea extracts both help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Also look for products with Hyaluronic acid which tackles hydration and lipids like squalene and ceramides which also increase hydration and boost the skin’s barrier functions. Alpha-lipoic acid diminishes fine lines, gives skin a healthy glow, and boosts levels of other antioxidants like vitamin C.
Products that plump and smooth lines
Here are some products which will help iron-out fine lines and fill in those creases for a plumper, more youthful appearance.
1. J.One Jelly Pack 50ml, R420 BUY
This is more of a temporary “line and pore filler” that provides a great base for a creaseless, smooth make-up finish.
2. Volufiline 15 Eye Essence, R1220 BUY
This is an amazing product and one of my current fave’s that has gained quite a global following. Loaded with plumping ingredients this is the perfect primer for eye make-up that prevents concealer or foundation from caking and creasing.

No doubt you’ve heard that marine based ingredients like seaweed or algae are really good for you. It’s true. Algae (seaweed) is filled with amazing life force elements that are easily absorbed and are rich in antioxidants, minerals and proteins that help nourish, protect and repair our skin. Thanks to the popularity of marine based ingredients, there is a huge amount of R&D being dedicated to developing algae derived skincare products. Expect to see marine algae in a wide variety of beauty and personal care products. Marine algae inputs have even been used in ingestible collagen products.

Still one of my best overnight moisturising masks thanks to the Nordic marine extract that entraps moisture molecules on the skin.
2. Zelens Marine Complex Deep Restorative Cream 50ml, R1890 BUY
There is no other cream on the market containing as many algae in one formula. This is a fantastic cream that plumps, protects and is massively anti-inflammatory. Yes, it’s pricey but you’re investing in yourself.

A natural way to moisturize and plump your lips.

Beauty from within, marine collagen supplements are considered superior because it is digested and absorbed by the body far more efficiently.
