There are so many unreasonable fashion trends out there – pointy heels that kill our feet, “naked dresses” made of netting and a few strategically scattered rhinestones, backless tops that require stick on bras … need I go on? Finally, a practical trend has emerged that many of us are already wearing – Athleisure.
While retail sales around the world have been in decline, the sale of athletic wear has been soaring. Designer versions of track pants, hoodies and leggings have emerged everywhere. This trend is shaking up the fashion world! Not only is Athleisure fashion comfortable, the wrinkle-free, moisture wicking fabrics are low maintenance. For this reason, I have a feeling that Athleisure might be around for a while.
HOW TO WEAR THE ATHLEISURE TREND
To pull off the tracksuit Athleisure look, it’s best to keep to one head-to-toe colour. Black, white and red are popular choices but anything goes. Kim Kardashian loves her white tracksuit but I’m one for the darker, more slimming shades. Track pants that are wider in the leg or with zips and press studs on the sides look great. Wear these with a fitting T-shirt underneath the tracksuit top. Sneakers or slides can be worn with your tracksuit during the day, and to take this look into the evening, wear with heels.
Leggings are now seen as pants! I tend to prefer plain leggings in a deep colour with insets for this look. Wear these with sneakers, e.g. white Adidas Stan Smiths, or black trainers. Finish the look with a leather jacket or a bomber jacket. And don’t forget the statement handbag and aviator sunglasses!
It may be a fleeting occurrence, but it seems that the fashion world is growing up and becoming practical. We’re seeing comfortable robe coats and mules, sneakers with dresses and now Athleisure. Long may it last!
