This past Sunday I was reminded how much I love a long, lazy weekend brunch. This time of year in Joburg is particularly nice – everything is still wonderfully green but it’s a tad cooler. Perfect to be outdoors enjoying some brunch bubbles and oysters! This made me think about all my favourite breakfast and brunch experiences in Joburg. I think it’s something the city does really well so thought I’d share some of my favourite Joburg brunch dishes and experiences.
FAVOURITE DISH AND COURTYARD EXPERIENCE: Salvation Café, 44 Stanley Avenue
The sausage breakfast burrito at the Salvation Café found at 44 Stanley Avenue is unrivaled as Michelle and my #1 breakfast dish. It’s a Mexican-inspired breakfast wrap filled with creamy scramble eggs, tomato salsa, fresh guacamole, herbs and fantastic free-range sausage. Every mouthful is heaven. “Muy Bueno” indeed! There’s also vegetarian option featuring yummy halloumi cheese instead of sausage.
We love the leafy, calm of the 44 Stanley Avenue precinct and Salvation Café has a wonderful courtyard where you can comfortably chill and enjoy your breakfast. If you’re not a fan of Mexican or are vegetarian – then there are other delectable breakfast options on offer. They make a killer Benedict as well as ridiculously good American-style pancakes. And if you can’t choose between sweet and savoury, then you can have a duo – one half Benedict, one half sweet pancake or French toast.

BEST LINGERING BRUNCH WITH A VIEW: Flames Restaurant at the Four Seasons
For a truly special weekend treat, there is nothing more indulgent that enjoying a 3 to 4-hour brunch. This is where hubby and I spent a good portion of our past Sunday. Few places can offer the experience of the Flames restaurant at the Four Seasons hotel in Westcliff. A breakfast that includes fresh oysters and bubbles while enjoying one of the most spectacular views of our Joburg urban garden gets my vote!
Prepare to spend the entire morning and early afternoon here enjoying everything they have to offer at your leisure. There’s a buffet with everything from sushi, fresh oysters, and super fresh slivers of smoked salmon. to the sweetest pear quarters swathed in Parma ham. There was a lovely array of salads, charcuterie and cheeses as well. I love a continental-style breakfast so had to hold myself back although I think we got our money’s worth in oysters alone! You can then select a warm egg breakfast (generally eggs Benedict or an omelette) from the menu. Next step in this brunch marathon is a “taste” of something from the lunch menu. Finish it all off by returning to the buffet which has an entire dessert section! Be warned – go hungry!
Where: Flames restaurant, Four Seasons Hotel, 67 Jan Smuts Ave, Westcliff
When: Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm – call ahead to reserve a table on the edge of the water so you enjoy an uninterrupted view!
YES, PIZZA IS A BREAKFAST DISH: La Stalla, Melville
La Stalla in Melville is part of the Joburg restaurant empire of the super talented and always busy James Diack. In addition to La Stalla, he also has Coobs in Parkhurst, and Douglas + Hale and Il Contadino both in Parktown North. These are all superb restaurants and well worth a visit! La Stalla in Melville however, has a superb breakfast menu packed with amazing ingredients. Top of my list is the breakfast pizza! A 20cm crispy pizza base topped with bacon, tomatoes and mozzarella and finally, 2 fried organic eggs. And if you’re so inclined, ask them to add some of their lip-smacking chorizo. Breakfast decadence. Enough said!
If pizza is not your thing, the rest of their breakfast offering is just as delicious. Next on my favourite La Stalla breakfast list is the artisanal bread with (homemade creamy) mozzarella, lamb sausage, spinach, eggs and Napolitano sauce. Scrumptious! Prefer a sweet breakfast? Then you’ll love the French toast with Nutella, honey and gorgeous mascarpone.
Where: La Stalla, 6 7th Street, Melville
When: Wed – Fri, 7am – 12pm and Sat – Sun, 8am -12pm

BEST BREAKFAST TOASTIE: Tortellino D’Oro, Oaklands
There’s a reason this 22-year family eatery is an institution in Joburg. Their restaurant and deli is a delight of special treats and quality ingredients. It’s probably best known for its amazing pasta dishes and well-stocked deli, but Tortellini also offers a brilliant breakfast menu. Michelle and I are always looking for an excuse to have meetings here. The coffee is great and always comes with a sweet treat on the side courtesy the deli. It has our favourite “sharing toastie” – the “Italian Style Toast” with Emmenthal, Parma Hama and fresh rocket. We like to add some fresh avocado and a poached egg each on the side for a perfect breakfast. It’s simple, but the quality of the ingredients is so good, (I can eat an entire slab of their Emmenthal cheese), this rates as one of our favourite uncomplicated “go-to” brekkies. Again, there is loads more on offer in their breakfast menu which is packed with deli items and quality ingredients.
Where: Tortellino D’Oro, Oaklands Shopping Centre, Corner Pretoria Road & Victoria Street, Oaklands
When: Monday – Saturday, 9am – 10pm and Sunday, 9am to 3pm
