We love Pilates. So, when My Pilates whispered to us that they had a new class called Body Poetry on their schedule, we had to try it out asap!
The My Pilates studio in Dunkeld, Jozi remains one of my favourite work-out studio’s. It has sweeping 180° views of the surrounding area and is a wonderfully light and airy space which itself, inspires feelings of health and happiness.
Another reason I like My Pilates, is that in addition to offering traditional Pilates classes and private sessions, they’re always adding new and different classes to their offering. We’ve had loads of fun trying out their Bootybarre and Rebound classes. This time we joined their new Body Poetry class presented by Raine Dunn.
ABOUT BODY POETRY
Raine Dunn, the creator of the Body Poetry class, is a believer of “changing it up” when it comes to physical activity. She adopts a cross-training approach to this class which embodies elements of all her favourite workout disciplines. From Pilates, Yoga and Barre to Functional Strength and HiiT (High Intensity Interval Training). Raine creates a workout intended to continually challenge the body by changing up the Body Poetry routine using elements from each of these workouts. She strives to balance strength and flexibility while keeping the heart rate elevated with movement. Her class offers you the benefits of all these different disciplines, in one non-stop 45-minute session.
What to expect?
Raine loves to work out to music and creates her own upbeat playlists for her classes. Expect an energetic 45-minute routine that includes Pilates and yoga-inspired floor-work, and functional strength moves, interspersed with bursts of dance-inspired cardio moves to quickly elevate the heart rate. It is a wonderful combination of balance, flexibility, strength and some cardio. This Body Poetry class will definitely leave you more red-faced and out-of-breath than your average, “traditional” Pilates class.
Who is Raine Dunn?
Raine Dunn is the gorgeous creator of the Body Poetry class at My Pilates. Raine has always been physically active enjoying ballet and horse-riding as a child. She started doing yoga at the age of 19 and after getting married and giving birth to a son, started doing Pilates to rebuild her core-strength. She saw rapid results and was hooked. In addition to qualifying as a Pilates and Barre instructor, she is also a Yoga teacher. She’s now bundled everything she’s learned in her years of being active, understanding her body, movement, and teaching, into this fun, combo class.
“Over the years I’ve realised that the most effective way to exercise is to mix it up rather than just sticking to one discipline. When training myself I work intuitively with my body, borrowing from all the styles which I have studied and practiced throughout my life.”
Michelle and I both confess that we got a tougher workout than we expected. Very happily so. Raine keeps you constantly moving to her curated playlist throughout the session. There are very brief “pauses” but no breaks which I like. It went by in a flash. I couldn’t believe we were already done when we started the cool down and stretches. It’s actually quite a deceptive workout. You do a lot in the 45-minutes which is great if like us, you are pressed for time and want to get maximum value out of your workout time.
We will definitely return and hope, Equilibrio Thursday newsletter permitting, to try to get to her evening class. This will be spectacular in the My Pilates studio with views of the sun-setting as you enjoy an invigorating workout after a long-day hunched over a desk.
