Bootybarre vs Barre 180

After our Barre 180 class at Virgin Active, we found ourselves chatting to some friends about a “bootybarre” class they had recently been to at a local Pilates studio, MyPilates. (Check out our review of Barre 180 posted on 13 June, click here) “Bootybarre” sounded like a good workout. Our curiosity piqued, Equilibrio decided to pay them a visit to see how this class compared to the Virgin Active Barre 180 workout.

The workout began with a combination of upper body exercises using light weights, while pulling off various ballet inspired poses which engaged the legs as well. This was followed by booty building barre work and then some core work on the mat with a sponge ball. A nicely balanced workout for those seeking a low impact full-body workout which you will definitely feel in the legs and butt the most!

MORE ABOUT BOOTYBARRE

Quick research revealed that “bootybarre” is a workout franchise from the States. It can only be offered by accredited instructors and has amassed quite a following worldwide. There are various types of classes with varying intensities (sculpt, sliders & burn) of which we’ve only done one.

BOOTYBARRE VERSUS BARRE 180

While a little different to the Barre 180 class at Virgin Active, I would say that the principles and the intensity are about the same as bootybarre.  The bootybarre class used free weights and included an arm workout where the Barre 180 didn’t.  The Barre 180 class we attended is probably more “balletic” than the bootybarre class but this may just be down to the style of the instructors.

WANT TO ATTEND A BOOTYBARRE CLASS?

Bootybarre classes are offered at various studios throughout South Africa. MyPilates, the studio I visited, is found on the 2nd floor of the Dunkeld West Centre in Johannesburg.  The MyPilates studio is wonderfully light with expansive views. The classes are small (maximum 8 persons) so there’s no slacking off! The rate of R150 per session for “walk-ins” is within the range of boutique fitness club classes.  If you’re already a member of a gym or other fitness studio, this presents a nice alternative if you’re keen to try something different from time to time. MyPilates are running specials if you purchase packages so contact them to learn more and experience this fun class for yourself.
