Smudj clothing is a Johannesburg based fashion brand that was established in 2003 by Teresa Bell. Smudj has a dedicated and highly skilled team of seamstresses and pattern makers that make all the garments in-house in South Africa.
The Smudj clothing aesthetic is modern with an impeccable focus on tailoring. Every Smudj garment is conceptualised, designed and created in-house. The team has unrelenting attention to detail and responsible for every aspect of the garment CMT (cut, make, trim) process. A perfect fit and finish are of supreme importance to this “Haughty Couture” label.
Interestingly, fashion has not always been a focus for Smudj founder, Teresa Bell who has a B-commerce degree and studied fine arts, not fashion. She then went on to do a higher diploma in advertising. Over time she developed a keen interest in fashion and had started designing a few styles of her own. We asked Teresa how she then came to own her one clothing label. “It sort of happened organically. I knocked together a couple of basic designs and showed them to a couple of retailers. One thing led to another and I had a clothing brand that mushroomed over the next couple of years!” Her marketing and advertising experience obviously also helped to get Smudj out there.
While Teresa makes it sound easy, we’ve seen how hard she works at making a success of Smudj clothing. The fashion industry is tough and never a glamorous as it seems. Teresa and her team of about 25 people are passionate about making beautiful clothing for all women to enjoy.
