Set in the buzzing suburb of Gardens, Cape Town, it is easy to miss the little bar called Cause Effect in one of the side roads. At the time of visiting this establishment, created by award-winning mixologists Kurt Schlechter, Siavash Marshall and James Phillips, it had only been in existence for a few weeks. Its infancy certainly didn’t mean that it was unknown. It was teeming with hip visitors and funky, tattooed waitresses expertly weaving through the crowds with trays of bubbling “experiential cocktails”.
Ambience: hip & happening (4/5)
Food & Drinks: Cocktail bar with casual meals (4/5)
Service: Good (4/5)
Overall: An awesome out-there cocktails hangout
Cause Effect is certainly not the place to take your girlfriend to whisper sweet nothings in her ear. It’s a noisy, uber cool cocktails joint with a hint of island and a smack of rock ‘n roll. Go there for a fun hangout with friends to drink adventurous drinks. Also great for pre-dinner drinks to set the scene for the evening.
FOOD & DRINKS
Although we didn’t eat, the food coming past our table looked divine. Think casual food like burgers and shared platters. The real hero of Cause Effect is the drinks menu. You can either choose one of the highly recommended cocktails, one of 40 local brandies or from a selection of local wines and craft beers.
The cocktail menu is laid out according to flavour experience. First you choose an experience – spicy, floral, herbal, bitter, umami, earthy etc. Then you pick a number to coincide with your experience. The cocktails off the “experiential list” arrive with much fanfare, smoke, props and delight. The standout for me was the Crouching Lion Hidden Gecko made with Don Julio resposado, chamomile, sake, sage buchu and Jasmine tea.

Many cocktails are an ode to the region with ingredients like seaweed, fynbos, sea cucumber other local elements link Caperitif, Wilderer Obstler apple-and-pear schnapps and Van der Hum liqueur.
As you can expect from all these special ingredients and processes, the cocktails are not cheap. You can expect to pay in the region of R120 for an experiential cocktail, so you can rack up a hefty bill if you’re a quick-drinker!
The very friendly and highly experienced staff were excellent. Even though the bar was full, we could always find someone to order from and drinks arrived reasonably quickly.
Be sure to book a table!
