My skin easily feels tight. Even as a teenager I never really had oily skin. Having my skin type is great news for acne and breakouts but less so for ageing. In this post, we look at the difference between dry or dehydrated skin and how to treat each issue. At the end of the post, we also give details on a great giveaway with Dermalogica in celebration of their 25th anniversary in South Africa.

Many of us experience flaky, itchy, sensitive and tight skin, especially during winter. If this sounds familiar, it’s important to know that these are all symptoms of BOTH dry and dehydrated skin. But the treatment of dry skin is different to dehydrated skin, so it’s important to know which category you fall in.

Dry or dehydrated skin

Info supplied by Dermalogica South Africa

I have dry skin. It’s dry all year round but becomes really dry during Joburg’s harsh winter. My hands and scalp get itchy and flaky too. Dry skin lacks sufficient oil.

So after testing my skin, Dermalogica South Africa recommended the following products:

The Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Cleanser and Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance with a serum and toner of my choice.

Jill has dehydrated skin that lacks sufficient water. She has oily areas and dry areas.

So after testing her skin, Dermalogica suggested these products for her skin:

The Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Cleanser and Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream with a toner and serum of her choice.

Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Cleanser

The BioReplenish Complex combined with phytoactives from Coconut and Murumuru Seed Butter helps to protect barrier lipids of the skin, preventing dryness after cleansing.

I’ve never liked creamy cleansers. This is the first creamy cleanser I’ve used that removes makeup extremely efficiently (no eye makeup remover necessary) and doesn’t leave an oily film on the skin. It leaves the skin feeling clean yet nourished. I love it.

FOR DRY: Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance

dry or dehydrated skin

The newly reformulated Intensive Moisture Balance with BioReplenish Complex helps to repair and enhance the skin’s lipid barrier. It has prebiotics from Chlorella Algae that helps to rebalance the skin’s natural microbiome and health.

I use this cream day and night followed by the new Dermalogica Prisma Protect SPF30 during the day or Dermalogica Sound Sleep Cocoon at night. It has, in combination with the Intensive Moisture Cleanser gone a long way to helping my skin feel less dry. I prefer Intensive Moisture Balance over the Dermalogica Super Rich Repair which I find a little hard to spread.

FOR DEHYDRATED: Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream

Dry or dehydrated skin

This moisturiser has been updated with Active HydraMesh Technology which helps to limit water loss of the skin and provides hydration for 48 hours. The formula protects the skin microbiome from environmental damage. In short, it helps to improve moisture by 80%.

Jill’s feedback after using the Skin Smoothing Cream for 4 weeks: “It’s the perfect medium-weight moisturiser that spreads beautifully on the skin even if you don’t use a serum beforehand! I’m also loving the clean, botanical smell. Sometimes when I’m rushing in the morning I wash quickly with a little Intensive Moisture Cleanser, spritz with the divine Antioxidant Hydramist and then apply the Skin Smoothing Cream. And I’m also in a habit of always finishing with the Prisma Protect SPF30. This is a near-perfect daytime combo and I haven’t got that dryness or tightness I was complaining so much about.”
