It’s almost Halloween, one of the most fun days in the year, and time to start planning this year’s Halloween costume. I like to go beyond the obvious and find ideas that are at least a tad creepy, easy to put together and don’t need an “adults only” label. Last year, I selected five fab freaky cinematic characters to inspire your Halloween costumes. This year, I’ve looked to 3 more of my favourite female cinematic characters for inspiration for easy DIY Halloween costumes. There’s a bullied teen striking back, crime boss’s uber cool wayward wife, and one of Sci-Fi horror’s most iconic alien ass-kicking heroines.
CARRIE – CARRIE
I’ve been a Stephen King fan since I picked up my brother’s copy of Salem’s Lot when I was 11. I was completely hypnotised by his story-telling, and a confirmed King addict after that. Carrie was his first published novel, and first book to be made into a movie. I shall never forget the site of Carries after a cruel prank by the school bullies left her standing on stage, her prom dress ruined and covered in blood from head to toe. Sissy Spacek’s face was a terrifying blend of shock and betrayal, and ultimately, pure rage. If you’re not sure what I’m on about, check out this clip of the famous “prom blood bath scene”.
Her look is easy to recreate. All you need is a tiara, prom-style dress and loads of fake blood. It might be a good idea to test the blood to see how easy it is to wash out of your hair and clothes before you cover yourself though!

MIA WALLACE – PULP FICTION
Mia Wallace is a 90’s cinematic icon. Her dance scene outfit, and subsequent overdose needle scene, has inspired one of the most popular Halloween costumes of the last two decades. Key is a white button down shirt, it’s the quintessential piece of Mia’s outfit. Cropped black trousers and ballet flats complete the outfit – although in the movie, she wears gold Chanel ballet flats which she slides off moments before hitting the dance floor in that dance scene with John Travolta. To finish the look, add a black bob, bright red lips, fake nose bleed and a syringe stuck to your chest…

ELLEN RIPLEY – ALIENS
Sigourney Weaver’s star-making turn as Ellen Ripley in the terrifying Alien, signaled the onset of the strong, female action heroine. Interestingly, the role was originally written for a man but the director, Ridley Scott decided to change it. And thus, one of my all-time favourite female ass-kicking heroes was born! If you can’t get your hands on a flame-thrower, add your kid’s toy laser rifle to the outfit below and you’re all set for action this Halloween!
