DECIPHERING THE EYESHADOW COLOUR WHEEL

Ever wonder which eyeshadows will make your eye colour pop? I think we all have. Your first thought might be that browns are best, or that eyeshadows close to your own eye colour will look good. You wouldn’t be wrong, but there are other colours that will look great too. Here’s how to determine the best eyeshadow for your eye colour.

THE COLOUR WHEEL

There’s something called a colour wheel that many makeup artists use as a reference to determine which colour eyeshadow will look best on you. This is how it works:

Step 1: choose the area on the wheel that best represents your eye colour. We’ll use me as an example. My eyes are blue.

Step 2: look at the colours directly opposite your eye colour on the wheel. You’ll see the opposite of my colour is orange which has lots of rusty and golden colours. These colours make blue eyes look brighter. I didn’t believe it until I tried it.

Step 3: the colours on the wheel the same as my eyes and directly adjacent to my eye colour also complement my eyes. In my case blue, blue-green and blue-purple.

So if you have green eyes with a little yellow, shades of red and red-purple will look great on you. But so too will green, yellow-green or blue-green.

If you have brown eyes, you’re in luck. Brown eyes are almost neutral and most eyeshadows look good on you. The best eyeshadow for your eye colour is shades of blue which really makes brown eyes pop!

Of course, the colours on the wheel are quite intense. Using these exact colours may be too much for most of us. Choose hues of your colours i.e. watered-down versions of the colours on the wheel.
