REVIEW – FYN RESTAURANT (CAPE TOWN)

I visited FYN Restaurant for the first time on New Years Eve. My husband and I had been fans of Chef Peter Tempelhoff (previously chef at award winning Greenhouse) for a while and couldn’t wait to visit his new establishment. It was a gamble; FYN had only opened a few days before New Year’s, but the evening was flawless. Peter and his team had created an unforgettable evening.

We were recently in Cape Town again and thought we’d see if the heavenly experience could be repeated. This time we took pictures.

Ambience: Contemporary class (5/5)
Food & Drinks: Asian with an African touch (5/5)
Service: Very Good (5/5)
Overall: A special treat for those who love Asian food

AMBIENCE

FYN Restaurant is a glass structure built on top of Speakers Corner on Parliament Street. In the evening, you get beautiful views of the city lights and the mountains in the distance.

The décor includes rich textures and dark wood with pebble-like ceiling art. The restaurant is open plan with seating at the “kitchen counter” and in the “main restaurant”. During our first visit we sat at the kitchen counter and loved being entertained by the action in the kitchen. Our seating during our second visit was in the main restaurant which was more intimate.

FOOD & DRINKS

FYN offers set menus which are predominantly Asian inspired with a local touch. The lunch menu consists of three courses, the Kaiseki Tray, a choice of a main course and dessert. The dinner menu starts with Canapes from Bento, Kaiseki Tray, a main course and the Sweet Kaiseki.

The Kaiseki Trays each come in small, discoverable, beautifully paired portions. Wine pairing is optional with both menus.

COST

FYN is not a cheap restaurant to eat at. The lunch menu costs R550, add R295 for the optional wine pairing. The dinner menu is R975 and the wine pairing, R550. Pricey. But for this extraordinary experience, worth it once in a while.

SERVICE

The service at FYN Restaurant is impeccable. Every interaction no matter if it’s with security at the entrance, the waiter or the sommelier is delightful.
