You’ll find Hines and Harley by looking out for the moustache-sign on 7th Avenue, Parktown North. Everything in this men’s grooming lounge dons a moustache – from the ice cubes in the drinks they serve to soaps, and the beautifully printed treatment menus on thick recycled paper. There’s no mistaking, this is a “men’s place”.
THE TREND IN MEN’S GROOMING
Men’s grooming has taken off globally. Statistics SA estimates that the global men’s grooming market will be worth $20.5 billion in 2017 and will be almost $30 billion by 2023. The top 10 boom markets for men’s toiletries since 2010 include Brazil, South Korea, the US, Germany, India and the UK. China, another country in the top 10, is showing growth in excess of 20 per cent per year since 2010. You can bet that South Africa is catching on to the trend.
In SA, men are increasingly interested in products that have been developed specifically for their needs. Although they are becoming more likely to shop for their own beauty and personal care products, women are still playing a big role in helping their men look good, often buying grooming products for them as gifts.
MEN’S SALONS & GROOMING LOUNGES
Gone are the days where the boys can sport their favourite holey T-shirt and faded shorts with flipflops and cracked heels. No, if ladies need to scrub, pluck and paint, men at least have to meet us halfway with a “sports pedicure” and a tidy haircut. And his beard that is so fashionable right now – it needs to be properly maintained!
Men-only salons are also gaining popularity across the world– and Hines and Harley is certainly ahead of the curve when it comes to South African men’s grooming. This is a men’s “den” if you’ve ever seen one. It was launched to give men a comfortable place where they can enjoy barbering, massage and grooming within a male environment. See the full treatment menu here.
With a roaring fireplace, hard-tac drinks and cold drip coffee on offer, the old 1911 house, with creaking original floors, has a lovely charm. Hines and Harley has a small but highly experienced staff compliment that are passionate not only about massage, waxing and hair, but are specialists in skincare. It’s good to know that the health of their customer’s skin is front of mind during the treatment or service. Most skincare treatments are performed using the South African TheraVine Men Range. These are cruelty-free products, and made from grape derivatives and botanical extracts which have exceptional anti-oxidant properties. While visiting, I got some excellent advice on the dry skin “Hubby” had developed under his beard. The recommended product, an organic beard balm by RB & Co, treated the ailment immediately.
You won’t spot a hint of “girliness” at Hines and Harley but female partners do occasionally join for a couples’ massage or a manicure while her other half has a haircut and a shave. They also offer facilities for group occasions like birthdays or bachelor’s parties.
Customers can indulge in some retail therapy with local and imported grooming products like The London Grooming Company, QMS, RB & Co, Theravine Men Range and more.
What’s next you may ask? Well, overseas some salons are trialling men’s make-up. And, although “manscara” hasn’t yet taken off, self-tanning is on the increase.
Hmmm… I think it may be a while before we’ll be gifting “manscara” to our South African men. But a gift voucher for a shave and a back-and-shoulder massage sure will go down well.
