How to wear a statement wrap with neutrals

Outfit with geometric knitted wrap

Geometric patterns always make a statement, especially black and white designs. A high-quality wrap is one of those items you can throw in your bag and take out when you need it, it’s something that will have a place in your closet for many decades.

The Romaria Americanah Wrap is a beauty. It is black and white with a hint of olive green. Romaria collaborates with graphic designers and artists to create their unique patterns so their pieces are unlike any other. The wrap’s patterns were designed in collaboration with local, South African artist, Mariana Lancastre.

Romaria uses African, sustainably farmed cotton during the machine knitting process. They source yarn from 100% BCI accredited cotton from South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is a movement aimed at educating and upskilling farmers in efficient and environmentally friendly farming methods. BCI’s holistic approach to sustainable cotton production covers all three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and economic.

We’ve styled the geometric patterned, knitted wrap with two options: a top and pants or a long hemp dress. We love the rich caramel-brown neutrals with this statement Romaria piece. The wrap will also look great with brighter colours but for us, these rust colours complement the stark monochrome patterns.

JMVB’s faux suede top has a round, elasticated neck and sleeves which create lovely flow and volume. The Asha Eleven Tembea Pants are made from a hemp-blend fabric and are tapered at the leg with turnups. The button of these pants was handmade by local jeweller Lichen & Leaf, a special touch. The Reefer Vellies are great shoes to pair with both the top and pants and the Asha Eleven Marefu Dress. The shoes are made from cork, and not only sustainable but also a fabulous neutral colour that goes with anything. The Marefu Dress is soft and comfy and has two slits on the sides.

Obviously and black and white wrap will suit and body type and any skin tone. It’s a winner!

The JMVB top is loose fitting, longer in length and very easy to wear and will suit any body type unless you have very sloping shoulders. I find that this caramel colour works with cool and warm skin tones.

The Asha Eleven pants are high waisted and with pleats at the front. The waistband is elasticated at the back for a good fit in the waist. This style suits hourglass figures best because it accentuated the waist.

The Asha Eleven dress suits taller women best. You have to be someone who doesn’t mind showing a little leg with the side slits. Although it’s a loose fit, curved tummies may be accentuated in this dress.

We added the stunning rubber and brass Iloni Ripple Neckpiece to this outfit. Iloni jewellery is handmade in Cape Town and has a very special Africa-meets-architecture feel about this. The broad rubber circles are the perfect accessory with the geometric patterned wrap.

The Reefer Cork Vellies are squared off at the top and fasten loosely above the ankle creating an interesting interplay with the slightly cropped pants and the midi length dress. Vellies, a style that originated in South Africa, have suddenly become statement footwear. And a style that might have only been seen on a farm or in the bush, is now being seen on fashionistas! We love this sustainable cork version in a natural colour that works with anything.

Keep your makeup soft and neutral with this outfit. Bright lips and lids will not work well with this outfit. Look for soft brown eyeshadow and dusty pink lipstick to finish off a sophisticated look.
