How to wear all-black athleisure

how to wear all-black athleisure

This is my outfit today. I was in a rush to get dressed so my lazy-girl-go-to was black with black. I have a busy day today – a morning in the office with a Zoom call, then the school run followed by a meeting with a potential new supplier in the afternoon. After getting into what I thought would be a rather “meh” outfit, I was pleasantly surprised at how slick it looked. It is perfect for all my activities today. Here’s how I’m wearing my all-black athleisure outfit today.

These fabulous culottes in a matching fabric to the sweater look great with the rest of the outfit. Note though that the culottes-and-sweater combo does look best on a taller person because it has lots of volume.

Here’s the revise look…

Head-to-toe black can either look very classy or very dreary. The colour (or lack thereof) can easily drain you and look sombre. I’m a big fan of an all-black outfit because it is quick to coordinate and accessorize. There are, however, a few tricks to making it look great. Here they are:

Make sure your black garments are well-tailored

By tailored, I mean well-made with striking details. In this outfit, for example, the sweater has a beautiful accent sleeve and a wide neck. The skinny pants are made from thick, stretchy fabric that gives the leg and bum shape. The pants also have a pintuck down the leg creating the illusion of extra length. These kinds of details help take your outfit from drab to fab.

Accessories matter when wearing all-black

With my black athleisure outfit I chose some fabulous, locally made sneakers by Reefer. These sneakers have a hemp upper and a recyclable sole. They are ultra comfy and look great with my sporty outfit.

The Kirsten Goss Wildcard no.16 earrings are a great size for this kind of outfit. They aren’t big (about 3cm long and 3cm wide) but they still make a statement. I love the mat drop contrasted by the polished post of these earrings. The shape also works well with the shell-inspired design on the handbag. I chose the silver version of these earrings that works well with the grey shades in the bag.

The final accessory is my Wanderland Collective bag. The fabric design is inspired by the ocean – urchins, shells and seaweed – and was created by local artist Nicole Levenberg. Not only does the bag have a great story but the size is practical (it can easily hold my phone, keys and wallets) and I can go hands-free by wearing it cross-body.

Makeup is a must with all-black

Even if you only wear a little, it is important to add colour to your face when wearing a black outfit. Black can drain colour from your face and emphasise dark rings so be sure to camouflage and use blush.

In this outfit, I used a trendy light pink shadow that picks up the pink in the bag with winged eyeliner. For my lips, I simply applied a light gloss since my mouth will be covered with a mask for most of the day.

Winged liner is huge at the moment. It can be tricky to apply so be sure to watch a few Youtube videos if you need tips (I love renowned makeup artist Wayne Goss’ videos).
