On days when I have meetings but am in a rush, my go-to makeup routine is light foundation, concealer, blush, brows, mascara and bright (usually) red lipstick. It is amazing how a bold coloured lipstick can make you look “made up” even if your makeup routine only took 5 minutes. The right shade can brighten you face, make your teeth look whiter and help you look glamorous.
Many women are nervous about wearing red lipstick. But there really is a shade and texture for everyone. There can be a major spoiler to this look – lipstick on your teeth, and there’s a very easy way to prevent this.
Let’s briefly run through the steps for applying lipstick perfectly:
STEP #1: LIGHTLY MOISTURISE YOUR LIPS
I normally just put face cream over my lips when I’m moisturising as part of my morning routine. Too much moisture might make your lipstick slip off so don’t overdo it.
STEP #2: BROADLY LINE YOUR LIPS
This means putting lipliner over most of the lip. Lipliner goes a long way to helping your lipstick last longer.
STEP #3: APPLY LIPSTICK OVER THE LIPLINER
Optional: after applying your lipstick you can blot very lightly by pressing a tissue to your lips if you feel the lipstick is a bit thick. Thick lipstick also tends to bleed/feather more into the lip line. Reapply lightly if too much came off.
STEP #4: THE CLEAN TEETH TRICK
This trick is a bit strange but works like a bomb to avoid getting lipstick on your teeth!
Insert your (clean) index finger into your mouth, put your lips around it, wiggle it around just a little and take it out.
You’ll see the lipstick on the inside of your lips, that would’ve been on your teeth when you smiled, has transferred to your finger. Now just wipe your finger.
STEP #5: SEAL
Since I’m normally out of time by now, I don’t do this step often, but for a night out, you can add this optional step to help your lipstick stay put and prevent feathering.
Take a skin coloured liner or concealer and fine brush and line the lips outside of the rim i.e. just outside your lipliner. Blend with a cotton bud or brush. This will make your lip line really precise and help keep your lipstick from feathering into the tiny lines of your mouth.

FINDING YOUR SHADE OF RED
There really are no rules here. I always used to wear only reds with blue undertones but recently realised that orangey reds also work, and are a bit more modern.
Here are a few recommendations to help you find your own shade.
Red lipstick for the newbie
If you haven’t worn red lipstick before this shade is for you. The colour suits almost anyone and it goes on sheer so it’s a little less intimidating. The texture is super smooth almost like a lipbalm.

Red lipstick for whiter looking teeth
Red lipsticks with blue undertones can make your teeth look whiter! Look for a cool shade like this one from organic brand Lula Fox.

Red lipstick for the lazy girl
Jill bought me this lipstick a while ago and I absolutely love it. Zelens is a “treatment brand” which means that their products contain skincare ingredients. This lipstick is highly pigmented and slightly matt which means you don’t really need liner and it stays on longer.
