It happens every year, I gain a few extra kilos during the colder months, and if I don’t act swiftly, they stay there! But this year I’m armed with a secret weapon to help me lose weight – information. Read on to find out how I plan to shed my winter weight.
I probably make it sound simpler than it is going to be. Weight loss is always difficult. Besides needing willpower, it’s so easy to fall victim to the latest weight loss wonder. Lotions that promise to banish cellulite and potions that “burn fat while you sleep”. The truth of the matter is that if I want to lose weight, and do so healthily, there’s no shortcut.
MY APPROACH – GAIN PERSONAL INSIGHTS AND KNOWLEDGE
You may have read some of our previous articles about Equilibrio’s journey with JOINCIRCLES, a company started by two inspirational ladies and cancer survivors, Margie Gander and Dr Heidi van Loggerenberg. They started JOINCIRCLES after both being diagnosed with cancer in their 30s and wanted to know how this could happen to two young, healthy women.
JOINCIRCLES focuses on the science of epigenetics and biochemistry and give patients information so that they can make smart choices about their health. Having this kind of information, helps take the guesswork out of health.

There are various kinds and combinations of DNA tests available. We have many of them linked on our website here. Jill and I did the DNA| HEALTH + ESTROGEN + DIET + SPORT test and have received very comprehensive feedback on each of these areas.

WHAT MY DNA|DIET TEST REVEALED AND HOW THIS WILL HELP ME BANISH THE WINTER BULGE
Some of the results confirmed suspicions I have always had, and others were more surprising. The test recommends one of three eating plans for you based on your DNA results. It can be either a low fat, low carb or Mediterranean diet that is recommended. The Mediterranean Diet is a diet with a bit of everything – a rainbow of plant foods, olive oil, a moderate amount of fish and poultry, low amounts of red meat and a moderate amount of alcohol, which is mostly wine during meals.
My eating plan recommendation
I was recommended the Mediterranean Diet. According to my genes, I don’t need to limit carbs, fats or proteins to lose weight. I’ll need to limit overall consumption or portion size.
As a matter of interest, one of my good friends did a similar genetic test, and his results revealed that he doesn’t “handle” saturated fat well. These fats tend to make him gain weight. He started limiting his red meat intake and boom! he lost 4 kilos in a short time.
What I need to look out for
My results gave several indicators that I store fat easily AND that exercise doesn’t have much of an impact on weight loss for me.
I’ve always suspected this. Even when I was cycling competitively and training many hours a week, I never lost much weight. Of course, exercise has many other benefits like cardio health and building toned muscles, but for weight loss, I need to watch what I eat. Exercise won’t aid my weight loss much.
The results did reveal that if I do exercise, moderate to high impact exercise is best for me. So faster cardio, or classes where I’m out of breath are the ones I should look for.
Very interestingly, I also have a gene that indicates that I have a slight evening preference to eating and this may result in weight gain because I won’t utilise the energy of the food I eat sufficiently before going bed. Eating smaller meals generally, but specifically watching that I don’t eat too much at night, will help me lose weight.I also need to make sure I get adequate amounts of sleep. Too little sleep will hamper my weight loss because I’m likely to crave carbs when I’m tired.
I need to start focusing on portion size. According to my genes, I don’t have any tendencies to gain weight when eating a specific macro nutrient. The energy I consume should be healthy foods and I should try to limit empty calories like sugar and booze.
I need to try to eat my main meals during the day, since I store fat easily and I tend to like eating at night which could hamper my weight loss.
Although for me, exercise doesn’t aid weight loss much, I’ll benefit most from moderate to high intensity workouts. So, I’m going to try exercise about four times a week, but really go for it when I do.
Remember that these are my own results and each person is different. Like my friend who lost weight by limiting saturated fat, the same approach won’t necessarily work for me. Ideally, one needs to do the test, and chat to a dietician for expert advice. I’m going to start with these high-level principles and if they don’t work, I’ll visit a professional as recommended by JOINCIRCLES.
