Looking back upon a year passed, its easy to revile its cruel, hard taught lessons. Sometimes life can be downright tough. As a result, most of us prefer to enthusiastically embrace the opportunities of the New Year, still unblemished and devoid of any disappointment. Each of us like to “move on” and embrace the future and the potential it presents. However, we at Equilibrio believe it’s equally important to look back and to embrace the good that has been done and the things we’ve achieved over the past year. So Mich and I chatted and agreed to each come up with a list of five things that we think made 2017 a pretty good year in our books.
Here they are, the good things that we both agree we can take with us from 2017:
I became a more conscious consumer
I started learning about natural, cruelty-free beauty and fashion, and slowly began taking small steps to change my behaviour. There’s still a long way to go.
I rode 350km in Mpumalanga
Jill and I lost our minds and together rode “the toughest race on tar”, the Panorama Cycle Tour. Little did we know that it would indirectly lead to the start of Equilibrio.
I loved a job that doesn’t pay well
During 2017 I learned it’s more important to be inspired and passionate about my job than getting a big pay check. I have faith that the money will come eventually.
I learned that I can do anything
Where there’s a will (and a YouTube video) there’s a way! Start afresh. Be persistent. Make it happen!
I began to love local
Every day I am discovering new local talent that’s doing great things. I am constantly wonderfully surprised by our ability to create and make beautiful, homegrown products of international standards.
I accepted that “wear sunscreen” is the best skincare advice
Sun damage to the skin occurs over a lifetime. I only fully appreciated the value of this piece of anti-aging advice this past year. Applying sunscreen is probably the most important step in your daily skincare routine that will protect and preserve your skin.
I learned that we are not alone
I met a growing number of inspirational and extraordinary women who are doing it for themselves. The number of professional female entrepreneurs is astounding and we are mushrooming at an impressive rate. We are the future of real economic growth and job creation in South Africa.
I was amazed that, finally, a spotlight was shone on abuse against women
We all saw the headlines and news reports. This year women finally learned that abuse is not ok. South Africans are behind on this trend, but hopefully we’ll get there.
I watched Star Wars: The Last Jedi
I cried, and not only because the brilliant, independent, strong and insightful Carrie Fisher (aka Princess Leia) passed away a year ago or because Luke made the ultimate sacrifice. The rich memories evoked by the sights and sounds on the screen folded me in a sweetly sentimental embrace. But what was most poignant, is that this Star Wars movie was mostly about rebirth and a new beginning. Letting go of the past to embrace the future. I think that’s worth taking into 2018.
Finally, the most amazing thing that happened to us in 2017
Equilibrio was born! We made our first tiny dent in the universe on 1 June 2017. In those 213 days, we wrote 188 full-length posts. There’s so much more to come, and we simply can’t wait for 2018.
We’d love to hear from you. Tell us what you loved and learned in 2017 in the comments section below.
