Equilibrio paid a visit to Mr Vinyl at 44 Stanley in Braamfontein on the weekend. Having ordered a number of LPs from their online store before, it was great to spend time hanging out at the shop. There you’ll find an extensive selection of new and guaranteed-quality used vinyl that is well curated and cleverly laid out – none of the usual crushing of 100 LPs into a space that’s big enough for only 50, and none of those album covers that Uncle Mike has been using as a coaster for the last 30 years either.
The music selection in the main leans towards rock, pop and indie, but there are also small but classy jazz and classical collections, as well as the obligatory selection of 12” dance tracks. Another great feature is a rack of SA-only artists. You can also pick up good value refurbished turntables and amplifiers.
All-in-all Mr Vinyl had the feel of those great independent record stores of the past (i.e. before the music mega-stores). They are a bunch of knowledgeable guys who are passionate about their music and are quick to offer advice and guidance. Grab a coffee at nearby Bean There (with lid on please) and take a wander/wonder through the store.
They have a great online service which I have used before and can recommend – find them at mrvinyl.co.za for those of you not in Joburg.
If you’re in the area, don’t miss their Vinyl Sundays once a month at the Stanley Beer Yard. The next one is this weekend, 6 August 2017.
