In the past, I struggled to find products that fully satisfy my skin’s thirst. I used all kinds of lotions and potions which all fell short of sufficiently nourishing my skin. That is, until our search to uncover quality, natural, local products, led me to try body balms and body butters. I’m not entirely sure why I had previously shied away from them. Whatever my reasons, they were proved wrong with our discovery of a handful of excellent body balms and butters that finally banished my dry skin.
LOTIONS VS. BALMS AND BUTTERS
If like me, you’ve never used body balms before, you’re likely to wonder what the difference is between lotions, balms and butters. Well, its principally water content and texture.
Body lotions are generally lighter, more fluid than both body butters and body balms since lotions are an emulsion of water and oils. Lotions absorb quickly and are more ideal for normal, not very dry, skin.
Body butters and balms generally do not contain any or much water and are made from plant oils, and nut and seed butters. As a result, they are thicker, more solid potions that are more nourishing and better suited to dryer skin.
Body butter is softer than body balm, with a creamy texture like whipped butter.
Body balms are extremely rich and thick and are heavier than body butter because they’re jam-packed with nourishing plant butters and oils.
Below are some of our favourite balms and butters made from natural and organic, non-toxic ingredients. I’m enjoying all these products and use them on different days depending on my mood and the nourishment I feel I need. If you’re not accustomed to the smell of natural products that don’t contain any artificial fragrances, it may take some time to get accustomed to the natural fragrances of some of these products. However, I’ve grown to prefer the natural, not-overpowering scent of these products.

WASS Body Balm Winter
Formulated with high-quality botanical oils for intense hydration, relief of excessively parched skin, and assistance with muscle stiffness. It locks in moisture and keeps the skin protected in harsh environments. I love the spicy aromas and luxurious texture of this product. It works wonders against winter dryness.
Suki Suki Naturals Whipped Shea Creme
This truly whipped cream-like body butter is made from shea butter, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil. It also has aloe vera to soothe the skin. While it’s not as thick as a balm because it’s water-based, it’s as nourishing as any of the balms reviewed. It absorbs beautifully and has a gorgeous scent with a hint of lavender that’s not at all over-powering.
Another fabulous thing about the Suki Suki Naturals Whipped Shea creme is that it can also be used to condition hair. I haven’t tried this yet but I probably will when I run out of conditioner as I sometimes do, especially when travelling.
Lulu & Marula Calming Body Balm
Mich does NOT enjoy anything that is oily, greasy or heavily fragranced on her skin. So, when she recommended I try this product, I had no doubt this was also going to be a winner.
The balm contains a blend of floral ingredients like neroli, geranium and ylang-ylang that soothes and restores your skin. It is a seriously moisturising body balm without feeling heavy. Marula, moringa and shea butter give your skin a dose of antioxidants to soften, calm and protect, while the floral extracts boost cell activity, ease stretch marks, broken capillaries and uneven skin tone. Best of all is the heavenly smell that I love inhaling before bed.
Delarom Excellence Firming Cream
Delarom Excellence Firming Cream contains various key ingredients to help keep skin moisturised and firm. It contains Kalpariane®, a brown alga extract rich in omega 3 and 6 that stimulates the production of collagen and elastin which in turn promotes skin suppleness and firmness. The organic rye extract, olive and sweet almond vegetable oils ensure a high level of moisture.
This butter smells delicious and leaves the skin feeling wonderfully moisturised. Although it’s pricey, the 200ml jar and rare ingredients may be worth it.
