Lately, I’ve been on a mission to find a good cruelty-free, natural mascara. It hasn’t been plain sailing. If there’s one element of natural makeup that can be complicated, it’s mascara.
WHY ARE NATURAL MASCARAS TRICKY?
Historically, natural mascara wasn’t good at all. Most were either too watery, weighing lashes down, or too dry, flaking off and falling under the eyes. More recently Cosmetics Chemists have been working on the ratios of plant-based waxes and oils to find more long-wearing combinations. Too much hard-wax causes flakes, too much oil results in smudges. The right mix disperses the mineral-based pigments better, which ensures deeper colour. Some brands have also started to add plant-based starches to the formula that absorb oil. They help make the lashes look thicker.
WHAT IS A NATURAL MASCARA?
Most green mascara formulas aren’t entirely all-natural. They’re often a combo of natural and naturally derived ingredients e.g. a chemical reaction to extract an essence. And some eco brands do use select synthetics like preservatives to prevent bacteria growth. Definitely not something we want near our eyes!
Lula Fox Long Lash Mascara
I’m a big fan of Lula Fox makeup. I use it daily and also in the makeup demos we’ve done in other posts.

The Lula Fox natural mascara formula is 85% organic and is free from artificial colours, preservatives and fragrances. I find the wand on the mascara a little short, but this will make it a great travel choice. It is also a little smudgy. Although this is not labeled as a volume mascara, one can build volume with a few extra layers. The wand gives good lash separation and the mascara is easy to remove with eye makeup remover.

Zelens Flirt Mascara
Zelens products combine powerful high-performance active biotechnology ingredients with the unique blend of plant-derived molecules with potent anti-aging and healing properties. I really like this mascara and although on the pricey side, it’s worth it. It is the ultimate treatment mascara – it conditions and promotes lash growth, lengthens, volumizes and separates. It has pretty packaging and is easy to remove.

Hey Gorgeous Pure Wild Volumising Mascara
This formula is made of all-natural ingredients distilled water, black kaolin, argan oil and cosmetic grade soy wax. I found the packaging a little basic, but boy, this mascara delivers massive lashes! It is true to its name in that department. The downside to this product is the separation, but if you don’t mind a bit of clumpiness, the volume is worth it. Easy to remove.

This natural mascara is made of organic ingredients that promise to nourish your lashes. It comes with a wand that is slightly bent which helps to add curl – hence the “curl and care” in the name. I found the formula quite thin and had to add quite a few layers of the product to get an effect. If you like very natural lashes this might be fine for you. The wand does add lift and curl but this can be achieved by bending any wire-based wand (see the link to my video below). I also find the packaging a little odd and the wand hard to hold. The product is easy to remove.

Dr. Hauschka Volume Mascara
The Dr. Hauschka natural mascara contains deep mineral pigments, and is enriched with ingredients like quince seed, rose wax and silk powder. The wand is extremely effective in giving beautiful volume and separation. The only problem is that my eyes sting for a second when I first apply the product. It then goes away. I haven’t read any other reviews where users complain about this, so perhaps I have overly sensitive eyes. This product is a little messy to remove.

Zuii Organic Maxi Lash Mascara
Jill recently switched to this Zuii product with amazing results. She previously struggled with smudging but since using Zuii Organic Maxi Lash her mascara stays put all day. Although not super volumising, one can build the product with a few extra layers. It is also easy to remove.

We’ll continue to test products and give feedback. There are still a few more natural mascaras around that we’d love to try!
