The Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge that takes place on 19 November, can’t be described as anything other than tough. It is a long way for anyone to cycle and takes place during a time of the year when it can be extremely hot. For many newbie cyclists the size of the occasion and the crowd can be very intimidating. And that’s why it’s so great that the sponsors have been going the extra mile to support inexperienced riders and hopefully see them return year after year.
THE LADIES CLINIC
Over the last few months, Cycle Challenge sponsors and CycleZone teamed up to offer support to women riders. They hosted three indoor training sessions at CycleZone studios, three outdoor rides in the Cradle of Humankind, and a mechanical workshop, which is particularly useful in case you get a puncture on race day. CycleZone coach, Nadine Visagie also prepared a structured training plan to help riders prepare for the big day.
I’ve been a CycleZone client for more than two years. It is a way for me to get maximum training benefits in a shorter time and in a safe, vibey environment. One trains at their indoor studio, on real bikes, using software that is specifically tailored to your fitness and strength level. After a CycleZone session, you are exhausted and know that you trained at the right intensity to get maximum results.
THE TREK TROOPERS
This year, organisers came up with the idea of a support group for inexperienced riders. Trek Troopers is an initiative to support the unseeded riders in the last six groups of the event. The Troopers are strong riders and members of CycleZone, who will be riding to assist the newbies make the six-hour cut-off. They will motivate them to get to the water stops, give advice on technique and assist with mechanical issues.
The Trek Troopers will be wearing high-visibility Trek-Cycle Challenge clothing and will have front and rear lights. If you’re riding in the last six start groups, there will be Trek Troopers in your group – identify them upfront and stay close to them to keep to the pace you’ll need to cross the finish line.
NOT RIDING THIS YEAR BUT KEEN FOR 2018?
Start training early for next year’s Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge and keep an eye out for initiatives like these that can assist you. Give CycleZone a call and train in studio to get your fitness levels up. Even consider getting a training program for the last 12 weeks before the race so that you can have the confidence that you will make it to the finish line.
