THAT LOVING FEELING AND OXYTOCIN

Do you think that romance consists of soft lighting, candles and a box of chocolates? Well… maybe a chocolate or two and a glass of champagne won’t hurt, but there is far more at play than we think. Part of that ‘loving feeling’ is as a result of the brain hormone called oxytocin, that is produced by the hypothalamus and stored in the pituitary gland in our brains. When oxytocin is at an optimum level you may find yourself feeling more confident and connected to others. Oxytocin is the hormone which encourages intimacy and closeness, so when your body is not producing the correct levels of oxytocin, your intimacy and relationships may be impacted. Triggering this love-hormone can be as simple as looking deeply into your love’s eyes or there might be a little more to it.

 

WHAT AFFECTS OXYTOCIN PRODUCTION?

Exercise (even a 30 minute walk), physical touch (give a hug) and certain foods may trigger oxytocin release. In fact, studies have suggested that merely the fragrance of certain comfort foods may help its release. Some healthy oxytocin inducing foods include eggs, bananas and pepper.

As with so many health matters, our gut plays a big role in the production of oxytocin in our brains. Simple issues such as food sensitivities and allergies, autoimmune issues or systemic candida (an overgrowth of yeast), can result in poor oxytocin levels and could be contributing to imbalanced emotions.
