Overall: An intimate music & dining experience
The Pot Luck Club by Luke Dale Roberts is one my favourite destinations in Cape Town. The whole experience is so exciting; from the glass lift ride to the top of a silo, to the views of Cape Town harbour, to the novel dining experience. Luke Dale Roberts is one of South Africa’s best chefs and a true visionary.
When I heard that Johannesburg was getting a pop-up version of The Pot Luck Club I could hardly contain myself. The day after I saw pictures of the opening on Instagram, I mailed them to make a booking. The word had spread like wild-fire and the restaurant was fully booked for the following four weeks!
When the night finally arrived all sympathies for Hubby, who had just landed from a business trip and was tired, disappeared. I couldn’t wait! The Marabi Club, where “The Pop Luck Club” is situated is in a rather dark and dingy road in New Doornfontein. We just loved the mystique of going to a part of town we were not too familiar with. We took a cab but apparently there is valet parking for those who arrive in their own cars. Once inside we found a cosy bar to the side and the dimly lit restaurant to the back. Just like it’s Cape Town counterpart which has the wow-factor of being on top of a silo, the Pop Luck had an edge too. It’s resident jazz band!
I love jazz, and what I really liked about this band is that the music was light and the volume low for the first part of the night and more festive later in the evening. Our table was right near the stage and we had no problems hearing each other during dinner.
Check out my short video clip on the Jazz band.
The menu at The Pop Luck Club had many familiar favourites from Cape Town and a few new additions. The format is small plates for two to share. We ordered six plates. My favourites for the night were the Sustainable Fish Crudo with Granadilla Tigers Milk (a citrus marinade), the Smoked Beef Fillet with Truffle Café Au Lait and our desert choice, the Heaven Bacon – an Almond and Apple Tart with burnt Peanut Butter, Popcorn ice cream & maple glazed bacon.
We also ordered the Fish Taco with Fresh Ceviche, Black Bean Puree, Avocado & Sour cream, The Cuban Sandwich (which is like a ham and cheese sandwich on steroids) and the Dark Beer and Doenjang Braised Short Rib. The latter was probably my least favourite as I found it a tad too sweet. But Hubby enjoyed it and had the lion’s share of the plate.
There’s a great cocktail list and an interesting winelist with high quality wine by the glass.
Please excuse the quality of the photographs – the romantic club lighting doesn’t lend itself to good pics.
Our waiter was friendly and attentive and the hostess, Jess, was fantastic. The food arrived at regular intervals but not at a speed where we felt rushed.
Rumour is that The Pop Luck Club will be around until October. Let’s hold thumbs that it will be a bit longer.
