What are culottes? The name of these women’s pants come from the French word culotte, i.e. panties, pants, knickers, trousers or shorts. The term originally also refers to a “split skirt” which is a perfect description for this wide-leg, cropped pair of pants. Read More
Culottes normally fit just over the knee, generally a flattering length for most ladies. We particularly love high-waisted versions. A high-waisted flared leg cropped pair of pants suits most women whether petite or curvy.
During the nineteenth-century long “split skirts” were made for horseback riding in Europe. These rather controversial pants enabled women to sit astride a horse rather than riding side-saddle. As split skirts gained more acceptance and popularity, they were also used for other activities such as gardening, walking and bike riding. Women could wear them, be comfortable, but still look like they are wearing skirts.
This season, we’re seeing this style of pants paired with matching tops and blazers. The casual suit is a great look for summer. It is comfortable, but the matching garments make the outfit a little more “dressy”. Wear your casual suit to the office, out to lunch with your friends or even on your Zoom call.
A number of our local, South African designers are making culottes this summer. Erre’s culottes come is black as well as bright colours. JMVB’s version comes in navy, red and black. Team your with a T-shirt, button-down shirt and a jacket if you wish. Strappy sandals are always a winner with these pants.
All our culotte pants are lovingly made by hand in South Africa.
