RUN FOR THE OCEANS WITH ADIDAS

This past Saturday was World Oceans Day and marked the start of the global Run For The Oceans movement which takes place from 8 – 16 June.  If you ever need a reason to lace up, this is it!  Adidas is calling all runners (or non-runners) to join the challenge to save our oceans. For every kilometer tracked in the Run For The Oceans Challenge on the Runtastic app, Adidas will donate US$1 to Parley Ocean School.  Our oceans are in crisis. Adidas is committed to doing something about that. We should be too.

OUR OCEANS ARE IN CRISIS

Ocean in crisis

Alberto Uncini Manganelli, GM Running, adidas, said: “The marine plastic crisis we’re facing has become critically urgent. We affect it daily through the plastics we use and throw away. Every minute, the equivalent of a dump truck of plastic waste enters our oceans. This could mean that by 2050 there may be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans. We know the stats and we’re aware of the issue. Now we need action.”

THE ADIDAS X PARLEY COLLABORATION

The Parley Ocean School, is an environmental education initiative that seeks to educate and mold a future generation of Ocean Guardians. In 2014 Adidas teamed up with Parley to help spread awareness and transform ocean plastic pollution into high-performance sportswear. The vision, “spinning the problem into a solution.”

Adidas X parley

Not only has Adidas x Parley helped spread awareness of the crisis facing our oceans, they’ve contributed to finding solutions. In 2016 they created (gorgeous) running shoes using upcycled marine plastic waste. They made 6 million pairs in 2018 and aim to make 11 million this year.  They don’t intend to stop there either. Adidas has committed to use only 100% recycled polyester by 2024.

ABOUT RUN FOR THE OCEANS

In 2018, Adidas launched the Run For The Oceans movement with the aim of raising US$1 million for Parley. The money raised has helped educate and empower 100,000 youths and their families living in coastal areas affected by plastic pollution.

The campaign this year promises to unite more runners in more locations to lace up and Run For The Oceans to reach its goal of US$1.5 million. For every kilometer completed between 8-16 June, Adidas will contribute US$1 to Parley Ocean School programs.

Adidas x Parley aims to engage even more young people globally and inspire long-term behavioral changes that benefit the ocean. Parley will host a digital curriculum that equips learners with the skills, tools and knowledge required to protect the planet’s oceans. It will also act as a digital space where young people can come together, share ideas and gain access to events, mentors, and tools.
