Celebrity chef, David Higgs, and Gary Kyriacou just opened a new restaurant, Saint. We popped in to Saint to see what the fanfare was all about.
Ambience: Grand (3/5)
Food & Drinks: Rustic Italian (4/5)
Service: Good (4/5)
Overall: An experience. For special occasions.
Saint is situated in the new MARC building (or what many call “The Pineapple”) on the corner of Maude and Rivonia in Sandton. It’s a super vibey area with numerous restaurants and patrons spilling onto the sidewalk with after-work drinks.
We arrived at Saint for a 19:30 dinner reservation and entered through the (wrong) bar entrance. The bar was pumping and packed to the brim with gin and cocktail sipping corporates and “trendies”.
We waded through the hoards (by the way, the entrance to the restaurant is on the side, nearest to Maude Street) and were ushered into the large main restaurant. Unlike the stylish Marble, Saint’s decor is, perhaps purposefully, over the top with many Michelangelo references. It has high ceilings with pillars and an inverted “dome” where, apparently, ancient artworks are projected onto the ceiling. A nice party trick which, on the night, was sadly out of order.
The loo’s have basins with cupped hands. Perhaps slightly creepy?
FOOD & DRINKS
The food at Saint is themed “crazy Italian”. The look-in kitchen sports imported pizza ovens and open flame grills which deliver a tasty rustic Italian inspired meal. Our party chose steak dishes and I had seafood. The pizzas have been getting good reviews and are worth a try.
Saint has an excellent wine list with local and imported wines and an innovative cocktail list.
Saint is expensive. And after a cocktail each, a shared starter, a bottle of wine and mains, the four of us were surprised at the bill we had managed to rack up. This is not the kind of place you visit every weekend, but definitely something to experience.
The service at Saint was friendly and attentive.
