Taking a relaxing, restorative bath offers the perfect opportunity for a personal time-out. It can be a calming me-time bathing ritual to look forward to at the end of a busy day or week. Studies show that people who use the ritual of bathing to take a moment to restore some balance and calm, are generally less stressful! We agree. If we take the time, we like to make our bathing ritual a spa-worthy experience, using products like the Dermalogica body collection that will rejuvenate and invigorate our tired skin. Here’s how.

Spa-worthy bathing ritual

When we have the luxury of some peace and quiet, we take creating a spa-worthy bathing ritual at home seriously. It’s important to take a moment to slip into a comfy robe, and prep your environment. Grab all those magazines that you’ve been wanting to page through. Put on some chill out music. Pour a glass of wine. Light some candles. You’re now set for some quiet calm and relaxation, and a skin rejuvenating experience.

Take time to prep

Bathing ritual prep

1. Start your ritual by slipping into this pretty Woodstock Laundry robe handcrafted in Cape Town from locally sourced ethical cotton. Ladies Gown, Tropical Green – R895.

2. Your feet will thank you when you slip into these fab soft thong-style slippers. Studio W Plain Slippers, Grey Melange – R160.

3. Votivo Red Currant is Equilibrio’s favourite home fragrance. It’s perfectly balanced and is neither overtly feminine nor strongly masculine. The calming scent has citrus tones that can also help uplift making it the perfect fragrance for our bath-time ritual. The Votivo Red Currant collection has a variety of gorgeous decorative soy wax candles. This one is made from black glass, has 2 wicks, and around 90 hours of burning time making it a worthwhile luxury. You can buy Votivo on Equilibrio. Use spa-quality products

Dermalogica body collection

On these special bath ritual days, we go all out and use spa-quality Dermalogica body collection. Michelle and I both have this quirk that we like to use an entire product range from a particular brand. We’re currently loving the full Dermalogica bathing ritual spa collection as we like to call it. Here’s a 4-step guide to our bathing ritual using Dermalogica.

Step 1 – Exfoliate

I know – most will say no, cleanse first then exfoliate but it doesn’t work for me. I don’t like to languish in a bath filled with my exfoliated skin. It’s a thing. I also like to use my cleanser to make sure I remove all the remnants of the body scrub.

1. Dermalogica Thermafoliant Body Scrub, 177ml – R849.

Start your bathing ritual by prepping your skin with some gentle exfoliation using Dermalogica Thermafoliant Body Scrub. This is a fine, non-abrasive scrub that doesn’t rely on a gritty texture to exfoliate because of the natural acids in the formula. It has a wonderful, natural, not heavily scented fragrance. After running my bath, I’ll hop in and out to get wet and then massage the Dermalogica Thermafoliant Body Scrub into my skin for a couple of minutes, paying special attention to my legs and arms. Then I’ll quickly jump under the shower to rinse and get ready for a soak in the bath.

Step 2 – Cleanse

2. Woman-Kind Natural Honey Comb Bath Sponge – R199.

I like to use my natural honeycomb sponge that is sustainably farmed and harvested off the coast of a Greek island. These sea sponges are hypoallergenic, containing no allergenic material at all – a huge bonus for someone as allergic as I am.

3. Dermalogica Conditioning Body Wash, 295ml – R499.

Cleanse and condition the skin with Dermalogica’s Conditioning Body Wash. This is a wonderful soap-free moisturising cleanser that leaves the skin feeling supple and hydrated. It has a wonderful clean and invigorating scent courtesy of the rosemary, eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon aromatic oils used in the formula. After soaking in the tub for a bit, and enjoying the tingling after-glow of the exfoliation, wet your natural sponge and squirt some of the body wash into it. Work into a lather and then lather all over your body.

Step 3 and 4 – Treat and hydrate

4. Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Body Oil, 125ml – R959.

Once bath time over its time to treat your beautifully prepped skin with Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Body Oil. This orange blossom scented oil is non-greasy, absorbs beautifully and a couple of drops go a really long way. Your skin will be left glowing. It’s also great to apply a couple of drops to your legs just before going out when wearing a skirt for J-Lo glow worthy legs.

5. Dermalogica Body Hydrating Cream, 295ml – R599.

The final step in this spa-worthy bathing ritual is to calm and relieve any dryness with the Dermalogica Body Hydrating Cream that’s packed with a wonderful collection of essential oils. Not everyone enjoys a body oil so you can choose to skip the Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Body Oil if you’re not a fan. (It’s really not oily and greasy though!) Alternatively, what I like to do is to combine the 2 by adding a drop or 2 of the Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Body Oil to the cream.

It is important for us to note that Dermalogica are equally concerned with the impact of their product ingredients on your skin and the environment. Another very important reason we love to use the Dermalogica body collection is because they are vegan friendly, cruelty-free, gluten-free, and formulated without artificial fragrances or colours.
