Sweater vests are a thing – here’s how to style the trend

Yup, the ultimate “grandad” fashion item, the sweater vest or knit vest, is having a huge fashion moment.  We’re getting rather used to seeing dad trends about. In the past couple of seasons we’ve seen chunky sneakers and bermuda shorts all over the runways and Instagram posts of the savvy street style bunch. This year we’re seeing the rise of the sweater vest!

Sweater vests have been popular since luxury fashion houses including Prada, Gucci and Dior included them in their AW20 collections. After this grandad-chic trend took off last autumn abroad, loads of major brands have caught on and designed fun versions of this classic layering piece for 2021. We’re now seeing them in loads of interesting iterations. Oversized, cropped, splashed with bold pattern, with high necks, round necks and v-necks. The options are endless.

The new sweater vest is infinitely cooler and modern. The key however, is the attitude with which you wear yours. Everyone from Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner to timeless style icon Victoria Beckham has tried out the trend. It’s one which strikes a perfect balance between dressed down comfort and workwear polish, depending on how you style it.

Multi-seasonal appeal

Probably the most fabulous aspect of the sweater vest is its multi-seasonal versatility. It’s the ideal piece of clothing for transitional weather layering. Wear it over a shirt or summer dress on days that it’s too hot for a full sweater or jacket, but too chilly for a simple tee or top.  When the days get even cooler, you can layer your sweater vest over a button-down blouse or thin turtleneck. They’re also a great way to wear under a coat or jacket without too much bulkiness in the sleeves. In Spring, you simply wear it on its own or over a tee with some jeans, shorts or a cute skirt. The possibilities are honestly endless. The versatility of a sweater vest is unmatched, making it an investment piece you’ll wear over and over again.

What attracts me most to the sweater vest is the fact that it is the perfect item for Autumn layering. Romaria’s “Pacgirl” sweater vest is my investment pick of the season. It’s made in South Africa from a sustainable cotton knit, and features a stunning geometric pattern created by acclaimed South African artist Renée Rossouw. I’m pulling it on over everything right now.

In this post I’m sharing my favourite 5 street-savvy approved ways I’m wearing my Romaria Pacgirl sweater vest this Autumn. I want to show you just how endless the styling possibilities are of this super versatile item.
