Now that winter is fully upon us we could all do with a regular, natural immune boost which helps fight inflammation and any nasty bugs that might be lurking. Our Tiger Tonic is a power house shot filled with nutrients that will help prevent and treat infection. A big bonus of this healthy recipe is that it is super quick to make.
TIGER TONIC INGREDIENTS
200ml lemon juice, from organic lemons (about 4-5 medium sized lemons)
200ml distilled water
200ml 100% pressed apple juice (I use the Woolies Pressed 100% Pink Lady Apple Juice to save time)
60g peeled fresh ginger, finely grated (the weight is of peeled ginger)
3 tablespoons raw, unprocessed honey
1 teaspoon organic cayenne pepper
Simply toss all the ingredients into a blender, and blend until the ginger is largely pureed. If you have finely grated the ginger, you don’t even need to puree this in a blender. You can simply decant into your containers. As this Tiger Tonic is made to drink as a shot, I decant my juice into recycled 100ml bottles so I can grab a shot on the go. This recipe makes about 700ml.
Note: If you want to get the best immune boosting, detoxifying benefits from this Tiger Tonic recipe, you need to use as much certified organic produce as you can get your hands on to limit the consumption of GMOs and harmful toxins routinely used in farming today.
The lemon juice provides a good dose of vitamin C, boosts immunity and detoxifies the body. Apples are extremely rich in flavonoids (known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties) and dietary fiber. The apples also provide a healthy dose of Vitamin C, B-complex vitamins and phytonutrients which protect the body from the harmful effects of free radicals.
Ginger contains chemicals (sesquiterpenes) that specifically target rhinoviruses, the most common family of cold viruses, as well as substances that suppress coughing. It’s also a natural pain and fever reducer and a mild sedative, so it can help you rest when you’re sick.
Honey is a great sore throat reliever, I can honestly testify to this. Its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties also help fight infections from viruses, bacteria, and fungi.
The cayenne pepper has numerous health benefits. It can assist in the effective treatment of fevers, poor circulation, nausea, and other digestive complaints. You only need a tiny bit to benefit from its medicinal properties. The cayenne is the secret ingredient that inspired the Tiger Tonic’s name – it makes it orange and gives it BITE!
