One great advantage of the world growing smaller via globalisation, is that narrow music tastes have broadened. Almost no one listens to a single genre anymore and many artists are themselves embracing new styles continuously. It’s no longer unusual to play a single artist’s album and hear rock, jazz and hip hop elements, sometimes even in a single song. The result is a glorious melting pot of beautiful noise.
2017 showed us this trend is here to stay. For our year-end playlist we have aimed for consistency for the listener. Consequently, we have chosen to stay clear of some otherwise brilliant music that was too genre-specific, noisy or left-field (maybe we’ll put together another playlist to cater for those some time). Despite this approach we have still achieved huge diversity; a playlist that traverses soul, dance, rock, hip hop, indie, folk and good old fashioned pop. Artists from across the planet are represented, from New Zealand to Canada (and of course a couple of locals). We feature some of the biggest stars on the planet and also many newbies, niche artists and minor acts.
Here then are the magnificent noises that soundtracked our homes, cars, gyms, bars and clubs this year…
