The 4th Avenue strip in Linden, Johannesburg has become a go-to for locals to grab a delicious deli-style brunch or lunch. The Whippet, a local artisan coffee shop was one of the first to help revive this area as a foodie hangout and there are now many more on 4th Avenue. Our music guru Andie likes to visit the strip, get a coffee and browse the fab vinyl record store, Record Mad. One of the newest additions is Van Der Linde Restaurant (VDL) named after the founder of Linden, Johannes Van Der Linde. Van der Linde Restaurant goes beyond the deli-style trend. It has four components: the Bakery & Deli,  Gin & Juice Bar, Restaurant and the Wine Shop (and I believe also a Bonzai care class). We joined them for lunch one weekend.

It’s a very pretty space with lots of wood, brass, stone and indoor plants. Sit inside near the bar or on the covered veranda with more light and air. There is also a more private dining area for small specific events and the pretty deli and bakery area with a stunning lit marble counter. A lovely looking restaurant.

It’s a limited but varied menu at Van Der Linde Restaurant. I was in the mood for something light so I ordered the Fungi Tartine, which is sourdough toast with an assortment of mushrooms, confit garlic and pinenuts. It was a little disappointing, not many mushrooms but the bread was nice.

My husband had one of the “larger meals”, the Calamari with curried veg, smoked paprika aioli and chips. It wasn’t very big and looked at little insipid on the plate but not bad tasting.

There isn’t a kiddies menu but “Little” was in the mood for a burger so we got her an adult beef burger. GOODNESS! It was simply perfect! Gourmet but not fussy with the perfect amount of garnish and sumptuous aioli. Luckily the six-year-old couldn’t even nearly finish it so mom piled in. I’m going back for my own burger! … and I wouldn’t mind trying the breakfast I think this is a place that will do breakfast well.

Our shared dessert was Crepe Suzette with basil cream. Very tasty.

Van Der Linde Restaurant has an innovative and interesting wine list full of beautiful local discoveries that many of us may not know.

We had a delightfully friendly waiter who served us with a lovely smile. The only problem was getting his attention, and the food did take a while. Perhaps this was an unusual occurrence, I’ll visit again to find out if it’s the norm and update the post if it’s better next time.



I think the menu will change often, but this was the menu and wine list on the day of our visit. Reasonable pricing.
