WELLNESS SHOTS TO BOOST YOUR HEALTH

Wellness shots are a convenient way to boost your daily intake of fresh fruit, veg and spices which have a whole host of health benefits. You don’t even need a juicer.  I simply blend all the ingredients into a juice-like consistency in my blender, and drink without straining. This way I enjoy the full benefits of the natural fiber in the ingredients.

We previously shared my flu-busting powerhouse Tiger Tonic recipe and thought it’s time for some new concoctions. Here are some more easy wellness shot recipes that are loaded with ingredients known to fight inflammation and aid gut health amongst numerous other health benefits.

Try to use only certified organic ingredients if you want to get the best immune boosting, detoxifying benefits from your wellness shots.

 

PINEAPPLE AND APPLE CIDER VINEGAR SHOT

Apple cider vinegar has become hugely popular due to numerous potential health benefits. You can drink it diluted with water (blech) or with fruits which makes it more palatable. This quick shot made with pineapple and coconut water is particularly great to have in the morning. It will jump start your metabolism, and give you an early morning energy boost!

Ingredients (makes 2 servings)

1 fresh pineapple, peeled and chopped (I leave the core in – mine weighed about 325g once peeled)

2 tablespoons (30ml) raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar (I use Bragg, see the shopping list below)

120ml (½ cup) filtered water or coconut water

To make

Toss all the ingredients into your blender and blend until smooth(ish). Once it’s done you’ll notice that there’s quite a lot of pineapple “foam”. This is normal and settles after a while. Just shake it all up again before drinking. I decant the juice into 2 upcycled 250ml bottles (courtesy Woolies juices) and then refrigerate before drinking since I prefer my shots chilled.

Health benefits

Pineapples are a nutritional gold mine rich in vitamins, enzymes and antioxidants that help boost the immune system, build strong bones and aid indigestion. They contain high amounts of vitamin C and manganese, which is important for antioxidant defenses. Pineapples also contain high amounts of thiamin, a B vitamin that is involved in energy production, and are a good way to get important dietary fiber and bromelain, an enzyme which reduces inflammation, into your diet. Best of all, despite their sweetness, pineapples are low in calories (1 cup of pineapple chunks which is about 165g only has 82 calories)!

Apple cider vinegar, an ancient remedy with numerous health benefits, naturally balances your body’s pH and blood sugar. It has many enzymes and acts as a probiotic improving gut health. It also helps reduce inflammation and aids in detoxing the liver and lymphatic system.

 

POMEGRANATE AND GINGER WELLNESS SHOTS

Ingredients (makes about 3x100ml wellness shots)

½ cup (120ml) pomegranate juice

120 ml (½ cup) filtered water

½ green apple, cored and cubed (not peeled)

2.5cm (1 inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated (I use about 15g which makes a SUPER gingery shot which I love – you may prefer to use less)

Note: I used 100% pressed pomegranate juice from Woolies. However, it’s actually not that hard to make your own pomegranate juice using fresh pomegranates and a blender. Read here if you want to know how.

To make

Toss all the ingredients into your blender and blend until smooth. I use refrigerated juice and water so can enjoy this shot immediately. It’s great for a morning boost (especially after a dinner with too much wine!).

Health benefits

Pomegranate, with three times as much antioxidant activity as green tea, fights the oxidative stress that wears down your immune defenses.

Ginger‘s active component, gingerol, is a natural anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. It also has antimicrobial and antifungal properties, which can help your body battle illness.

 

FIGHT INFLAMMATION WITH GOLDEN MILK

Also called turmeric tea, Golden Milk is another power-house wellness shot thanks to its principal ingredients, turmeric and ginger. Numerous studies have linked turmeric with a wide range of anti-inflammatory effects. Legend has it that on the Japanese island of Okinawa, the population drink this ancient wellness shot daily. Some speculate that perhaps this is why the people of Okinawa have one of the world’s longest average life spans of about 81 years. And it is utterly delicious!

Ingredients (makes 2 x 120ml servings)

2 cups light, unsweetened coconut milk (or almond or soy milk) 

½-1 tablespoon peeled, grated fresh ginger or ¼ teaspoon ginger powder

1 tablespoon peeled, grated fresh turmeric or 1 teaspoon turmeric powder

1 teaspoon cinnamon powder or a 2.5cm (1 inch) cinnamon stick

3-4 freshly ground black peppercorns

1-2 teaspoons raw honey or organic maple syrup 

Optional:  

½ teaspoon coconut oil (also aids with the absorption of turmeric)

2 whole cloves or 2 cardamom pods

To make

Place all the ingredients, excluding the coconut oil and honey or maple syrup, in a saucepan. Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer. Cover and allow to simmer for 5-10 minutes, depending on how strong you want your infusion. Turn off the heat. Add the coconut oil and honey or maple syrup. Strain and enjoy!

Health benefits

Consuming turmeric supports digestion, immune function and liver function. Some studies have also shown that turmeric has antidepressant properties, leading to better moods, less stress, better sleep, and improved brain health. This really is the perfect soothing bedtime treat.

Golden Milk is flavored with some black pepper which enhances the absorption and the anti-inflammatory effects of turmeric. (Piperine, a key chemical in black pepper, has been known to boost turmeric’s absorption by 2,000 percent.) Black pepper also contains a number of essential nutrients, including manganese, iron and vitamin K, and is commonly used to calm digestive issues.
