Tomorrow many South Africans will be celebrating Heritage Day by being outside and having a braai. We have already given you some ideas for great side dishes for your braai, now pair your meal with some wonderful wines. Martin Pienaar, co-owner of Dry Dock Liquor, suggests these wines for your braai.
ROSÉ
I love drinking rosé in warm weather. These wines are often light and thirst quenching. South Africa is making some beautiful fruity, yet dry rosé at the moment. Rosé is a great wine when braaing chicken and seafood and will go very well with the Caprese Pasta Salad and Caesar Salad suggested in our braai side dishes post.
Black Oystercatcher Rosé – R99
Tamboerskloof Katharien Rosé – R125
Creation African Penguin Reserve Rosé – R90
WHITE WINE
Dry Dock has chosen three distinct white wines for us. When it comes to white wine, a blend between Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon is my favourite. Sauvignon Blanc is fresh and light and the Sémillon brings a delicate floral element to the wine. The Constantia Glen Two matures in barrels which will give the wine extra depth to stand up to our braai food. The Beaumont Chenin will go well with seafood, especially shellfish and spicy dishes (like our Mexican Mielies side dish). The Baleia Inge Chardonnay is a more substantial, yet fruity, white wine which will go well with creamy dishes and salads like Dale’s Caesar Salad.
Constantia Glen Two (Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon blend) – R245
Beaumont Chenin – R99
Baleia Inge Chardonnay – R195
RED WINE
When it comes to the red, Dry Dock pulled out some big guns for us. These red wines are beautiful and bold and will pair amazingly with your red braai meat. Fram and Koelfontein Shiraz pair very well with a steak and pepper sauce. The DeMorgenzon Maestro Red is a Bordeaux-style red with almost half of the blend being Cabernet Sauvignon. This style of wine pairs fantastically with most red meats.
Fram Shiraz – R 110
Koelfontein Shiraz – R132
DeMorgenzon Maestro Red – R220
