We recently spent time at SA Fashion Week enjoying the autumn/winter 2018 designs of our rapidly growing pool of local design talent. Mich has done a fabulous post on the trends we spotted – be sure to check it out here for your AW18 wardrobe essentials.
WOOLWORTHS & SUSTAINABILITY
Aside from some fabulous designs, what also resonated and impressed us was the Woolworths launch of its local fashion capsule collection, Style by SA. We previously reported here on the great things The Edcon Group is doing for the local fashion industry. We are SO pleased to see that another of our favourite local retailers, Woolworths, is not only embracing local design talent, but also sustainability in the fashion industry as well.
This should come as no surprise to us since Woolworths’ efforts to support and promote sustainable farming, food supply and vending have been evident in their stores for many years. Sustainability is clearly at the very core of their business. Their work has been internationally recognised when Woolworths was recently ranked #40 in FORTUNE magazine’s third annual “Change the World” list. It’s the only African company to make the grade!
It’s becoming increasingly clear that sustainable fashion is the future – a sentiment held by global fashion brands, designers and retailers alike. This is evident in the arrival of new international sustainable fashion awards like The Green Carpet Fashion Awards Italia held at the close of Milan Fashion week earlier this year. These awards celebrate the work being done in the supply chain to preserve sustainable production, and to innovate towards a lesser footprint – “putting sustainability at the heart of fashion“.
STYLE BY SA & THE BETTER COTTON COLLECTION
The Woolworths Style by SA collection launched at SAFW AW18 features the work of 10 local fashion designers and collectives. There are three collections. The Glam Collection, The Resort Collection and The Better Cotton Collection.
Four fabulous forerunners in the local fashion industry namely, Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu, Selfi and AKJP, were commissioned by Woolworths to produce collections made using sustainable fibres referred to as The Better Cotton Collection. The cotton used is sourced from the SADC region. It has been ethically produced in a manner which supports the well-being of both the people who produce it and the environment in which it is grown. In addition, the cotton dyeing process which can be so destructive to the environment, uses only eco-friendly chemicals.
The Style by SA capsule collection is available online and in select Woolworths stores now. The Resort and Glam Collections are available at Woolworths Centurion, Sandton, Rosebank, Canal Walk and Westville Pavilion. The Better Cotton Collection is available online and at Woolworths Sandton.
