We love spring in Jozi – in spite of the allergies! The city is blanketed with the prettiest purples and pinks of our iconic Jacarandas and sprawling Bougainvilleas. It even has its own scent courtesy the fragrant blossoming Jasmine found everywhere. In the morning, we’re woken by the sounds of excited birds accompanying the sun streaming into the bedroom. There’s no need for an alarm clock this time of year!
I like to ease into my morning with a refreshing cup of freshly infused ginger and lemon water. Then, one of my favourite ways to embrace our beautiful spring mornings is with a simple, invigorating yoga routine. The Sun Salutation is the perfect ritual to perform on waking. It’s like having an extended stretch and full-body yawn.
Pull on something comfy and spend 10-15 minutes preparing for the day with this easy to remember sequence. It’s perfect for anyone, even if you have no experience with yoga. It wakes the body, quiets the mind, and forces you to take a moment to chill and appreciate life before launching into your undoubtedly, crazy day.
SUN SALUTATION FOR BEGINNERS
I was initially looking for a step-by-step guide with images of each pose but then came across this brilliant instructional video courtesy yogiapproved.com. This “free class” instructional video, takes you through the beginner version of the Sun Salutation called Sun Salutation A. Ashton first breaks the sequence down and explains each pose thoroughly. She also gives some really cool tips. Once you’ve gone through the sequence on this guided step-by-step basis with her, she runs through the entire sequence again, incorporating the correct breathing technique. Even if you’ve done this sequence before, you might learn something.
Here’s a chart you can glance at as a reminder once you’ve done this a couple of times and are ready to do it on your own.
